which crossword is this, hatton? It helps next time if you put that in your heading, in case others have done it.

??? is also easier to read than ## for next time.
1 Ria - air back
Question Author
The Actuary crossword - don't know how to edit that now. Also, I'm not convinced about the hashtag point but OK, next time I'll conform.
3 foUNd
Question Author
I thought of RIA but is there a Lake RIA?
Also thought of foUNd but I thought the introduction to Democrat was D but then it leaves the 'fo' unexplained
Well a Ria is a drowned river valley - so a lake of sorts is formed.

?
found?
Sorry Shoota- I missed yours
witless? I can't parse it though so it's probably wrong
Question Author
If FOUND is correct, it's ?I?U??? so it can't be witless (I did think of witless!)
I couldn't fully parse FOUND- in addition to the definition I can see UN and D but not the OF
Question Author
If FOUND is correct, the last one would be ?C?F????S and it would probably have to be SCAFFOLDS, which clearly doesn't fit, so I'm thinking FOUND could be wrong
1a
Deed everyone read on sign in US!

Actuaries ?
Sounds promising Maya- i did think of ACt and also Aries but couldn't find a full word. I'm still not sure what the definition is though
The preamble doesn't help me a great deal either...

As this is the international edition of The Actuary,
this puzzle celebrates 1 9 12 which facilitates the
provision of 17 19 through the 18 efforts of 32 in
areas with a lack of 34 and contributes
to 8 of the profession and the spread of 7
Question Author
Definition is probably "us", i.e. "actuaries" as the magazine is "The Actuary". Apologies for omitting this in the title.

The international organisation..... one becomes U???D. Could it be UNHID or something? UN??D?
ah so...

! Actuaries fits the theme
Unhood?
I thought of 'Unhid'

UN (H)as (I)ntroduction (D)emocrat

but not too sure
Question Author
The preamble reads (now):

As this is the international edition of The Actuary, this puzzle celebrates ACTUARIES 9 BORDERS which facilitates the provision of TEMPORARY SERVICES through the VOLUNTEER efforts of MEMBERS in areas with a lack of RESOURCES and contributes to AWARENESS of the profession and the spread of EDUCATION.

Number 9 is: "Lacking humour, call for beheading (7)" so it has to fit in that sentence neatly.
