Can anyone help me with 6A? " Tardy settlers, Raven thought (4)". I have * I * H which leads me to think that the answer might be FISH. No idea why.

I've got -i-e/-e-d-r

I presume the second word is 'leader' (editor's contribution). The first word could be 'file', but .......
Just a guess live leader?
Yes, file (as in cabinet, or line of soldiers) + leader as (person, or article).
file leader - is the soldier at the front of any file http://www.thefreedictionary.com/File+leader

and the editor's leader column could be filed away in the place where it goes
I would go with

File Leader
defn: he soldier at the front of any file, who covers and leads those in rear of him

..and , I suppose, to put something in its place = to file (it away)
... wish I could think and type faster...
