Passkey.
Tenuous. Crib/copy
Anyway, it'll bump it up the list, Tom.
Bass(i)net ?
Not sure but it is Crib without i ?
(i can't find bassnet anywhere)
Nor me Bibblebub
is there a non-honours version of B.A.(Hons) that isn't just B.A. e.g. B.A. (Ssnet) if it was to directly fit the letters
Found an alternative spelling of Bascinet ?
I share your frustration with this one tommy-h. I just cannot for the life of me see what this can be because there is no word "bassnet". Are your letters definitely right?
Question Author
definitely right.Submitted with passkey for want of an answer and got 1 wrong.
Wow! I would have put passkey too without much confidence - a pass in an exam is a basic pass without honours and as previously pointed out a passkey could be a duplicate (crib). Presumably passkey is definitely the one you got wrong!!

Thats my guess, everything else works well.No all correct subs as yet.Difficult getting into the mindframe of a setter from 1948.Long gone to setter heaven I presume.RIP.
Had not realised that it was a crossword originally set in 1948! Perhaps the answer is an obsolete word. When will you get the answers - I am fascinated to know!
Question Author
You`ll know as soon as I know!
Cheers Tommy-H I will keep checking. Have a good Boxing Day & hope your football team win. Regards Maxy
Question Author
Have just been advised passkey is indeed correct. Now very puzzled indeed.Still not happy with definition but not the first time. Will get back when I find out where I went wrong.MEA CULPA.
Question Author

Question Author
Clue,10ac,Subject of sport in the shade.(9) AM?R?L?I?

could any kind person parse this for me?
Its a quote from John Milton's Lycidas.

And strictly meditate the thankles Muse,
Were it not better don as others use,
To sport with Amaryllis in the shade,
Or with the tangles of Neæra's hair?
