Someone mentioned ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’, and that’s precisely what this is. I attended a birthday party for a four year old recently, and was utterly appalled. The child is in a class of 30 at her private pre-school, and it is expected that every child invites every other child in the class to birthday parties – so basically it’s one big round of birthday parties. Tables and chairs were hired for the event, and caterers and entertainers brought in - and the high value of the gifts given was quite obscene. When these kids grow up, the real world is going to come as quite a shock to them. Their parents are doing them no favours whatsoever.
My eldest doesn't have parties now (and too young for a disco) - this year he had an under water camera and a diving trip (we are on holidays). Boy #2 got a party at soft play (£12 a child) and girl had her whole class to a part in the village hall with a disco/entertainer with games, party food and gift bags. The things will get a party when they turn five. Each to his own.
