Thanks for your help that leaves me with another wrong answer (5) mother returns to an island in the middle east ?m?a? ( I had put Macau but if your answers are correct
the first a would now be an M - the only word I have come up with is Amman but that is in Jordan, not an island. help.

The island is the isle of MAN, and putting MA reversed and next to it give AMMAN, which is in the Middle East.

Same thing happened to me the other day, the town where I live was the answer to a crossword clue but it took ages for it to pop into my head.
