Why So Few Black And Asian People At Glastonbury?

Lenny Henry, that stalwart champion of 'diversity', says he is “always surprised” by the lack of black and brown people at Glastonbury, as he called for better representation of ethnic minorities in all facets of British society.

Are they prevented from buying tickets - or is it that they just don't fancy living for several days in a tent in a muddy field?

Much like Diane Abbott (who is a racist), David Lammy and a few others, Lenny Henry sees racism in pretty much everything, but to crowbar a racist slant into black people choosing not to attend Glastonbury is absurd.

The question is relevant because Sir Lenny is asking “why is this?”. You could say that black people simply don’t want to go - but why? Is it down to a perceived lack of diversity among the acts, is because of the cost? Is it because camping isn’t ‘a black thing’.

It may be that the reason is entirely innocuous but to not ask the question is to assume an answer.

It’s similar to the question “why are there so few female CEOs of FTSE 100 companies?”

Is is because women don’t work in the fields represented by those companies, because women still bear most of the child care responsibilities in a relationship, the glass ceiling etc.

It may be that the answer again is innocuous and nothing to do with sexism - but it may be that there are structural inequalities that women face that need to be addressed.

But simply ignoring the question isn’t the way to go. Ask the question to test the answer.

…and never assume.
By the way naomi24 - if you ask a question and someone disagrees with you l, it’s best not to refer to it as preaching.

You were the one who invited comment.

Do you see?
Togo

No - at Glastonbury it’s drugs…LOTS AND LOTS of drugs.

Our theory was that there’s little trouble because so many attendees are wasted.
//You could say that black people simply don’t want to go - but why?//

Why does it matter?
naomi24

When you wrote:

SP, Tommy Robinson and his ilk criticise culture. Not the same thing at all.

…what did you mean?

Are you saying that TR and his ilk (by that I mean the BNP, Britain First etc) ARE racists?
NJ

Why does it matter?

Are you really going to say that on www.theANSWERbank.co.uk

I guess people like to know why things are the way they are.
Are you sugesting that black people are less likely to take drugs, and that makes them more prone to violence sp?
Togo

Yes

No

I dunno

Frankly the discussion with naomi24 and New judge is thoroughly interesting right now. Do you mind if I carry on there and blank your off-topic diversion?

As a ‘thank you’ I’ll either agree or disagree with you - whatever works for you!

SP, //By the way naomi24 - if you ask a question and someone disagrees with you l, it’s best not to refer to it as preaching.

I didn’t question or invite comment on your perception of other people's answers on AB.

//Are you saying that TR and his ilk (by that I mean the BNP, Britain First etc) ARE racists?//

Tommy Robinson criticises the Muslim culture but as far as I'm aware he has distanced himself from organisations you mention. I'll ask you again to stick to the topic. Anything else is likely to give the impression you're trying to divert the thread.
naomi24

You want me to stick to the topic but you brought racism into this when you accused Lenny Henry of racism with your ver first response (to Bobbisox1).

So isn't the topic racism?

I thought you wanted to talk about Sir Lenny's alleged racist agenda earlier. Has that changed?

No sure what this refers to:

[i]I didn’t question or invite comment on your perception of other people's answers on AB.[i]

Could you be more specific?
Question Author
SP, The topic is Lenny Henry's opinions. Read the OP.

//[i]I didn’t question or invite comment on your perception of other people's answers on AB.[i]

Could you be more specific?//

That is absolutely specific.
Also naomi24...if as the OP you introduces a diversion (as you did when you brought Comic Relief and Sadiq Khan into the conversation), it's perfectly acceptable for responders to follow you.

However as a responder I always think it's polite to stay close to the topic of the thread (unless the questioner has diverted).

Don't you agree?
//I didn’t question or invite comment on your perception of other people's answers on AB.

Not sure how to say this politely - but surely in a thread where you have a difference of opinion, mall discussion HAS to be based on your perception of other people's answers?

How on earth can you have a discussion on a topic unless you're allowed to comment on your perception of the answers you've received.

Not sure I understand the issue here.

Just as aside and slightly off topic, Mr Henry will be pontificating on 'Lenny Henry's Caribbean Britain ' - Wednesday 9.00 BBC2
Should anyone be interested.
Good Lord naomi24

I can't believe I've not noticed before.

You're copying what I've said to you in previous threads.

Literally just clocked.

Previously I've told you to grow up, I've told you I've got to leave a thread (quite suddenly), I've told you to the stick to the topic at hand and I've cautioned you on being snide.

And you've said the same right back to me!

LOL

That's...impressive!!!

Big wink there.
Cheers MargoTester

He's certainly getting about!
Question Author
SP, what on earth are you talking about? No ... please don't tell me. Lenny Henry was a founder of Comic Relief and Khan just happened to be mentioned in a link I posted about Lenny Henry and Glastonbury. Not even a good try from you - and frankly your attempts to divert this thread are becoming increasingly boring.
racism only work one way (according to some)
naomi24

Nope...this thread was about Sir Lenny's comments on Glastonbury.

You were the one who then changed the topic to include Comic Relief and Sadiq Khan. You went off-topic.

It's okay though - let's get right back to the topic. What is it you wanted to say?
