I rarely begin a thread these days and I very rarely get angry enough to hurt someone badly. I could hurt this chap.

I'd probably think about doing something nasty to him for all of a five minute knee jerk reaction but that's about it. I hope he understands how incensed people are because of his actions and the reasons why it has made the news.

yeah, he may well have said that. He probably wouldn't have advocated you breaking the law and hurting him though, or would he have?

Or make him dig a trench in his back garden and get someone to lob grenades and small arms fire at him for a few weeks?

I used to live next to a war memorial and it was never respected. This wasn't youngsters showing disrespect, these were grown men using it as a public toilet. This is going back to the 70's and 80's...now it's had to be caged off. Grown men who are probably in their 50's or 60's now!

If punishment wasn't so wishy washy I doubt there is one person on this thread who would feel like taking the law into their own hands. We should have confidence that crime will be dealt with appropriately but we don't.

The misunderstanding on threads like this is that if you are calm when calling out a cowardly despicable act then you aren't upset by it.
I could no more commit some of the acts mentioned on these pages by people of a mature age than fly to the moon.
I may also add that I know of many ex servicemen and women who would never use violence in the way described by some.

I don't think "appropriate" includes physically harming someone, you do and there's where we can't meet i'm afraid
I'd be happy to see him have a prison sentence, community service, fine or whatever. I'd be happy to see him taught some humility, but not in the way you advocate. I am not sure that not having been a service person makes much of a difference here. I am sure there are many service people who wouldn't want to be a vigilante thug. there are probably others, like you, who do.

I said I couldn't get really upset over it, not that I couldn't get upset. However, I can get upset and move on without entertaining bloodthirsty thoughts about retribution. The memorial will be replaced, other not so thick people will continue to show respect.
