Oh, and the investigation cost £2million.
It must have been a PC nightmare gathering all the information in today's ultra sensitive / media influenced arena. I suspect this added to the bringing of a conviction and increased costs.

I worked as a Samaritan volunteer for a number of years, and from time to time, a completely plausible and believable individual would tie up volunteers' valuable time for hours, even days and weeks, spinning out a web of utter lies and deceit for no other motive than attention seeking and mischief.

The philosophy of the organisation was, and hopefully still is - treat every call as genuine, and if you get taken in, the that's a risk taken by providing the service.

The phrase was - 'If you haven't been conned occasionally, you are not listening properly... ' and that is an approach I can understand.

If the police approach every initial investigation from the point of view that they are being conned and led up several garden paths, then genuine abuse cases are going to be missed, and that is unacceptable.

On this occasion, the perpetrator was very very clever - most lack the ability to sustain a con like this for a prolonged period of time against experts in interviews and evidence gathering.

Yes it was a disgrace, and a serious dent in funds that could have been better used with genuine cases, but I would rather a once-in-a-lifetime case like this, and genuine cases approached initially with a sense of belief in what the victim is alleging, than for cynicism and doubt to let genuine abuse, and abusers, go undetected.

Points taken andy-hughes.
I sincerely hope this piece of human detritus get locked-up for a very very long time.

The money spent is largely immaterial - it is the emotional toll of those still alive at the time of the false accusations that is more important than the money wasted.

I heard Harvey Proctor's interview on LBC the day of Beech's arrest, and he was a broken man, both emotionally and financially - he was in tears recounting what he went through.

Carl Beech is scum of the highest order.
is he also the one who accused the Labour peer Greville Janner of abuse? Or is it only a crime against Tories?
Yes, jno, greville janner was picked out too.
What a vile, attention seeking piece of excrement.
I hope the rest of his life is spent in abject misery.

Don't understand why the boys in blue only found out late in the day that this man was himself a paedophile. Surely you would check someone out who was making such serious claims. And why did they tell him that they believed him? Surely that comes after looking into the claims.
