Good evening all – just back after a very pleasant lunch with my elderly parents.
I see that youngmafbog (15.07) has been contributing in a positive way.
There is a suggestion that my assertion that the US healthcare system is horrendous is 'unsubstantiated nonsense'. First, if that is a dig at me over my contributions to other threads here – I acknowledge that political debate is entirely different from scientific debate. Politics is, as someone once said, ‘the art of the possible’ Political persuasion is often about emotions, and persuasion rather than objective facts.
But the assertion was that the US healthcare system is horrendous – let me explain:
My sister has lived in the US for over 30 years. Her husband recently had a heart attack. We know from first hand experience just how expensive that is. Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Second, I have many friends in the US. I have personally contributed hundreds of dollars to crowdfunding projects to enable them to buy medication or pay other medical bills, because they have a choice between feeding themselves or buying medication. When lack of medication will kill you, that is a tough choice. I choose to spend my money to help them out.
Third, one of my good friends in the US got cancer. He had been doing public work all his life, but did not have medical insurance. It was fortunate that he died after a relatively short illness, but still his wife, who also has cancer now has a huge medical bill to deal with, in addition to her other troubles. I contributed to his crowdfunding page as well.
Contrast that with my nephew in the UK. He found a lump on his testicle just before Christmas. It was quickly diagnosed as cancer. The part was removed within days and his recovery is now underway. At no charge.
I know which system I prefer to live in.
If you think that a medical system where people prefer to die than be diagnosed with cancer and leave their relatives with huge bills, or go begging on the internet is preferable to one where the NHS – with all its faults – can sort you out within a few days, then, my friend, I put it to you that you are in a small minority.

Emmie....10,000's of operations have had to be cancelled. People are waiting for hours, on trolleys in corridors and in A+E, and Hunt is "sorry"
We discuss the NHS quite often on here and there are all sorts of things that need to be improved and changed. But Hunt has been in charge for years.

At no point at all. It is quite fashionable to see Ministers held to account for their Departments' failings in day to day matters. It is no more Mr Hunt's fault that the NHS is struggling than it is mine or yours. He is in no position to cure the annual "crisis" that engulfs the service every year at this time. The people in a position to deal with it are the (multitude) of NHS managers. They will say they have insufficient funds. In fact they have more than enough money to run the service (which is about the only thing politicians have any real control over). It's simply that they are inept at spending it wisely. Any business that knows it will face two or three months of exceptional demand every year would plan for it and handle it. The NHS doesn't because its highly paid managers and directors are essentially inept.

This is true. What they don't have is the manpower since the Govt stopped bursaries to fund Nursing degrees.

Whether Nurses need to have degrees or not is not the reason that 50,000 operations have been cancelled, or why people are waiting hours on trolleys in corridors.
I see that Hunt has not only kept his job but has been given extra responsibilities for Social Care.
So now, he can make a hash of Social Care as well as the NHS.

Emmie...all that may be true, but Hunt is the Heath Minister.....he should either do something or stand aside and let someone else have a go. If t is true what people are saying this evening, about how the session between him and May went, then more fool May.
Far be it to praise a previous Leader of the Tory Party, but Hunt would have been kicked out long ago.
