If he was trying to joke, it didn't work. Doesn't seem like he was trying to be funny, either, since he later confirmed that he meant what he'd said.
In any case it's all totally self-defeating. His point, such as it was, was that anything that distracts from the science is unhelpful. But a row over whether or not he's sexist (and, by extension, plenty of other scientists are also) is exactly the distraction he wants to avoid.

For the record, the women attending the races did look like slappers to me, and I will apologise if that offended anyone. But, like you Naomi, I support free speech, and thus defend my right to give an opinion !
