Fed Up Exam Results News ....
Anyone else fed up with the amount of coverage of GCE exam results given on all the news channels today? Only their family and friends appreciate this exciting time for them, I'm not remotely interested, in my opinion, it just takes up valuable air time when it could be given to more interesting things - more coverage of the historic Lancasters and Vulcan flight for example, that news item only lasted less than 2 mins!
People came to Lincolnshire today from all over the UK, there was a family from Aberdeen and another from Romford, who had travelled miles to see this once in a lifetime opportunity, they could have interviewed them ........

What I do find strange is these days a lot of schools remove competition, ie no sports days, everybody is equal, etc and then come exam time and the best are lauded and the pupils with lesser grades are forgotten. Then after a few days it's back to "all pupils are equal" again.

Ann has postulated that too much coverage is given to this once a year event, and I disagree profoundly. Young people are rarely in the news these days for good reasons but this is good news. I visited 3 homes in the course of my work this last week or so, and met teenagers that had just received their A and GCSE results and I couldn't be more pleased and happy for them.
And I am getting a tad fed up with these comments that we have every August, along the lines of "Well, the exams were much harder in my day" etc. Lets give some praise where its due here. You don't get an A star unless you have worked very hard indeed.

Now give us "oldies" some slack here as AB is mainly made up of present generation parents and to a less extent the over 60's and a few over 70,s +
Now in "our day" at 16 yrs of age one took "School Certificate" and you took 5or 6 subjects and if you were really bright 8-10 subjects and you either passed with a credit or distinction (present A*) or you failed.
Distinctions were hard to come by.
At 18yrs of age one took Higher School Cert ...2 or 3 subjects, maximum of 4 and you failed or got from 5-10...10 being Equivalent to a A* today.
Only the top 8% would get one A+.
Now students take 10 subjects and not infrequently get more than 6 A* and often 10 A*.
Do you see the problem that us "oldies " have?"
Has education really improved that much in 50 years, are our doctors barristers, teachers and so on......that much better?
When us "oldies" die.......all will be acknowledged in the world of education.............perhaps.

But you must admit that millions more kids are entering these exams then ever did in your day, or mine come to that. I am 61 now and most kids that I was in the Comp. with back in the 1960's left school without any qualifications whatsoever, except perhaps a CSE in Woodwork.
The job that I am doing now for the Welsh Government and the DWP involves interviewing people all over South Wales, and people education levels is one of the main topics. Over the last 6 years, I have been amazed how little qualifications a lot of people my age and older have, and its a major factor in these peoples low achievement in life generally.
I just think that if we have to put up with a bit of overreaction and hype once a year. its a small price to pay for celebrating these kids achievements.
