How can the Beeb justify putting 65 people in a hotel at a cost of £265 per night whilst making this programme? I am furious, why do they waste the taxpayers money like this?

Why are you furious? what about the people who LIKE to see these programmes? I'd rather see lambing than all these live human reality so-called-talent shows which cost a damn sight more.

Scriv....I think you'll find that the TV license is a tax albeit a hypothecated one.
£120,000 for a week! Hope they negotiated a good discount. Wonder if it was a free bar.
What would you have the BBC do? Not make any programs? Forgive me but aren't there more than enough repeats as it is? If you were able to compare that to the overall cost of the program I think you would find it to be a very small percentage and quite honestly worth every penny for a program that is,or was, entertaining, informative and very good viewing.
Having actually read the article, the beeb paid only £58 per person per night. That was for four nights. So £15,000 doesn't seem so bad now.
yes, buried very very deep in that article is the actual price, £58 a night.

Rather different from the figure at the top of "up to £279-a-night".

You see why Maria Miller wants to keep newspapers in their place, and why newspapers don't want it; how would they be able to twist the truth like this?
They didn`t pay £265 per night though. They paid a £58 corporate rate which is pretty reasonable by anyone`s standard.
Agreed. £58 per night is pretty good for the Dalmahoy. Costs me a lot more when I stay.

65 people does sound a lot - but then I have no idea at all of how many people would reasonably be required to do a week long outside broadcast.

Bit of a storm in teacup, it seems to me.
It`s a Marriott. The BBC probably have a good corporate account with Marriott which gives them a good discount if they bring the money in (in the way that large corporations/companies have with airlines).

you're funny.

Do you think your anecdotal experience automatically means the BBC is badly run, Svejk?

I suspect the BBC is like many large corporations - suffers from a bloated middle management layer, and very generous salary and pension schemes for senior and executive management.

But on this specific issue, raised by Tizzi and referenced in the Telegraph article, I do not see the need to be outraged.
no, my anecdote was to support tiz and stop you all quoting that £58 pn.
the reason I 'know' the bbc is very badly run is because 'every' report I've ever read about it has said it was.
have you got another condescending comeback?
If you see it as condescending, thats your a problem with your perception and your comment, Svejk, not mine.

Tizzis OP suggests a nightly rate of £265 - further reading of an article on exactly the same issue suggests that the amount is significantly less, a corporate rate of £58 a night. So not so extravagant then.

And I have no idea how many people it takes to make an OB for a week - are you sufficiently expert in making TV programmes to judge? Or should we just all agree with you take your anecdotal comments about drinking and expenses and " all the reports you have read" as the wisdom of Solomon and an absolutely true and perfect reflection of the truth?
no, I think you've cornered the 'wisdom of solomon' market on ab. your acolytes might find your supercilious manner entertaining but I don't.
I'm no genius but even I, occasionally, run into people less intelligent than me. but I don't make it my life's work to demean or ridicule them. most people could 'trawl' the internet to support any stance on any topic, few bother.
The BBC are a commercial rival to the Telegraph and the rest of the newspaper media, which is why it is being constantly being attacked. Sometimes fairly, but most.

That is why Svejk that you constantly read it is poor. Because its commercial rivals want to belueve it is poor. Their aim is to diminished the BBC's services, so they can make more money out of replacing the BBC's services with their own.
Should read:
...Sometimes fairly, but mostly, unfairly.
