A very sad case but.

As she was at a family party were there no friends or relations to drive her home, no one to give her money for a taxi, and should the police be used as a taxi service for drunks or tipsy people on their way home after a night out.

it is really unrealistic for police to take every drunk girl home. as someone else has said, i wouldn't have been in that situation - i always book a taxi home and never drink my taxi money. why couldn't a relative have helped? if people start blaming the police, they should also blame the relatives for letting her walk home alone.

I checked the "Usage" section, It doesn't mention Free Taxi Service for drunks.
Maybe we should focus a little more attention on the Family who allowed her to be in that position in the first place!
I am appalled that this has happened, however it really is not the responsibility of the Police to be a Taxi!
i usually make taxis do a slight detour to a cashpoint if i have no money on me.

also millions of women walk home late at night and are perfectly safe - perhaps she did it all the time?

I agree about the family though, hard to understand they just let her walk. my dad wont let me walk one or two streets away if its dark - he will insist on driving me. when i lived at home he would drive me to my local which was probably about 500 yards away.
but then i have also walked home in the dark alone and drunk-ish on a fair few occasions, though only short distances.
No, the police are not to blame, only the person who killed her is to blame. And no, I don't think they should have given her a lift particularly either, sad case but there's no point in the 'what if's', I imagine everyone who saw her that night wishes they did something differently.
AOG, that used to happen, being drunk and disorderly meant a night sleeping it off in the cells. Had that happened she would be alive today, i can't believe some think that it was ok to ignore her, seeing the plastic plods didn't think she was drunk, which is in the news report. I totally agree about foresight, it's a good thing we are all so well behaved, or not. I remember when young behaving like that, going off home without a care, being rather worse for wear, anything could have happened, thankfully i am still here to tell the tale. Would i do it again, no, i am older and wiser, and though she was 28, a woman with two children, that doesn't mean to say she was all that mature or clued up. We can't change what happened, but how about this, the next time a lone female is tottering down the street obviously rather worse for wear ask if she is at least all right.
Em, the way things are today, I would think against doing what you suggested Why? If the woman asked you to run her home & you said no, what could the consequences be, ( I think you know my meaning/) I think I would just phone the plod at least then you have done your duty, at least the police are aware of the person & her locality.
? so if you see a drunk woman on her own ...phone the police?
Don't start mick, use your loaf with the Q.
MT, no, but perhaps ask where the friends, family are. Or if she has money for a cab, i would rather stick the person in a taxi in the belief she will get home safe. The police are obviously too busy.

Do you honestly think the police want someone to phone them every time they spot a lone drunk woman in the street
do you?
em, you would come across as a creep if you constantly approached drunk women. She would really have to be in a state before I thought in necessary to offer help.
how many drunk, lone women have you spotted lately. Most women seem to travel in packs these days, drunk or sober.
this woman must have been in a bit of a state, contrary to what the plod say, the lass is dead, at the hands of another bstard. I rarely venture out at night, i don't like the d ickheads that hang around our area, and if i am going out will take taxi home.
I will put this in a way you may understand M.T. Unknowing to me, your or any one's daughter was walking in the early hours of the morning swaying, what would I do? I would NOT PICK HER up, I would inform the police & give my location, I would also state the reason I phoned SAFETY" for the person. the reason I would not pick her up? I once give a person a lift to N/hampton many years ago the area I used to stop at was near the police station, this bitch tried it on regards money, until I dragged her into the police station, the police knew the lorry as we used to stop there on a regular basis. how many person passed this woman & regret either informing the police or phoning a taxi whilst they were near by.
Some interesting replies on this topic, some may like to Google..

"How many metres can I walk on my own at night?"
the police pulled over to me just at the corner of my road once to check on me, i was yards from my door, it was light (very early) but they would not let me just go into my house - they insisted on taking me to the station 'for my own safety'.
i wasnt paralytic just a bit wobbly so i remember it well, i was gobsmacked they wouldnt allow me to just go inside, they wanted to see me inside and into bed but i didnt want them to, they said they were concerned if fall down the stairs....

so i find it hard to believe that if this woman was totally ruined and a danger to herself theyd have let her walk - she was sober enough to flag them down.

the fact that she was alone is not in itself a reason for them to give her a lift.

do you think police should give all lone women a lift then?

i realise there is 'some' danger, but they are grown women, if they choose to walk in the street late at night then its up to them.

some people are making it sound like women shouldnt set foot in the streets at night because of the hoards of murders and rapists everywhere, like its an everyday occurence

its is actually still quite rare.

as i said, if it hadnt been her it would have been someone else.
Great, mamyalynne, very interesting
i would only be concerned about a lone woman walking at night, if she was staggering quite badly or falling - or there appeared to be someone harrassing or following her ... if she was fine and just alone, that would not concern me.

I haven't got a clue what you are talking about, or the point you are trying to make..
Joko..... this is going to shock you

I agree with your post ;0)
mamalynne, thats very true - because if a man is intent on attacking someone, he will, and they only need to be outside for 2 minutes and walk 20ft - near where he is lurking - for him to have chance to grab them.
