Women Better Drivers, Say Scientists

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Researchers at a leading UK University have reignited a conflict almost as old as the petrol engine itself – the endless battle of the sexes about who are the better drivers.

The research team has claimed that the female hormone oestrogen could give women the edge in abilities such as safe driving.

Tests they carried out drew a direct link between oestrogen and the minds ability to learn and switch their attention rapidly between one thing and another.

Researchers say that has a direct link with driving skills such as being able to concentrate for longer and on more than one element of driving.

No doubt motor insurance firms will be eagerly looking into the results with an eye on premiums. Already women usually have less expensive insurance than men as they are seen as “safer” drivers, this new research could lower their premiums even more.

"There are many skills involved in driving. For things like attention, there is evidence women are better, but we tend to find men are better at elements requiring confidence, though they do have more accidents," said a representative of the university research team.
