Parents Invited To Get Child Car Seats Checked

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motor insurance customers who are concerned they may not have fitted their child's car seat properly are being given the opportunity to get it checked.

Local police forces have launched a service during which a road safety officer will ensure parents have done all they can to provide protection for youngsters in the event of an accident.

People keen to attend one of the sessions have been asked to make an appointment. Officers pointed out they were not looking to criticise or catch parents out. They stated their aim was to provide an impartial, free service in order to help keep kids safe.

The road safety coordinator stated: "The idea behind this new appointment scheme is to deliver an enhanced service on a date and at a time when the public know we will be available."

Child seats are extremely effective when fitted correctly. Rear-facing baby seats reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by more than 70 per cent and forward-facing toddler seats by around 50 per cent.

People looking to book a slot have been advised to contact their local road safety officer.
