Motorists Still Failing To Belt Up

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

A third of all motorists are failing to observe the laws of the land and not belting up in the back says new motor insurance research.

Fewer than one in two Londoners say that they belt up when riding in the backseat of a car, compared to the virtuous south west where three quarters told motor insurance researchers they do.

More than ten per cent of men and 14 per cent of people aged between 18 and 24 admitted that they did not always wear a seat belt while sitting in the front of a car.

Both drivers and passengers are leaving themselves open to whiplash injuries, with 45 per cent saying that they never think about adjusting their headrests, despite half of those who responded to the motor insurance survey saying that they had been in a crash.

"These findings reveal a worrying lack of concern amongst motorists for their own safety and those of their passengers," said a motor insurance manager.

"Next time people get into a car we are urging them to belt up in the back, adjust their headrests and check their mirrors. These few simple steps could help reduce the number of serious injuries caused in road accidents."
