Drivers Urged To Remove Valuables

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motorists in Oxford keen to avoid a car insurance claim may want to take additional security measures following a spate of break-ins in the area. Recently, vehicles have been targeted in streets all over the city.

Victims ended up losing a variety of goods, including a laptop, disabled badge, satnav, stereo and hair straighteners. Motorists in the region were urged to remove all valuables from their autos whenever leaving them unattended.

A Detective Sergeant at Thames Valley Police explained: "Most car criminals are opportunists and are unlikely to break into an empty vehicle."

In addition to removing valuables, it was suggested anyone with immobilisers and alarms should activate them when parking up.

People with information on any car crimes were also encouraged to ring the police. It is vital that passersby report any and all suspicious behaviour.

If you have to keep valuables in your car always put them in the boot out of sight. Closing windows, sun roofs and locking doors deters casual thieves.

Drivers who are concerned about the safety of their vehicles may find fitting additional security equipment gives them peace of mind and means they qualify for cheaper motor insurance.
