Dangerous Driver Training "Doesn't Work"

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Dangerous drivers who are given extra training instead of being prosecuted for driving offences show no improvement in their driving, Fleetnews Net reports.

Research by the Department of Transport found that drivers who undertook the two-day motor insurance recommended National Driver Improvement Scheme (NDIS) were no better or safer drivers after a year of taking the training.

The survey looked at the driving of several former NDIS students who were at fault in accidents.

The news will be a blow for campaigners supporting additional courses instead of prosecution.

Currently, people involved in a serious road traffic accident who have been found to be at fault have the choice to have the case referred to the crown prosecution service, or can attend a NDIS course to reduce their motor insurance quotes.

The report said: "Although in the current research we found evidence of a modest improvement in attitudes towards safe driving for those who attend the course compared with a similar control group, we did not find reliable evidence that this translates into improved driving performance on the road."

It concluded by saying that course attendance had only a "modest" effect on attitudes, which were "not strong enough to translate into safety gains".  It recommended that the course's structure is reviewed.
