The above is not fitted with power steering,so I would like to 'pump up' the front tyres ( 185/70 R13 ). Have asked some local garages about the safe maximum pressure to use,but have got no satisfactory answers......would be grateful for any info.

The Sierra Mk1 did have power steering anyway: http://www.fordopedia.org/parts-catalog/sierra-mk1/H2.30

Try asking at a tyre fitting place if I were you. Although it will tell you in the car's hand book ( if you still have it ) also a Haynes workshop manual will also tell you. Might also be a sticker on one of the door pillars with the recommended tyre pressures on.
I wouldn't pump them up beyond the recommended maximum pressure, you may get slightly easier steering but would be at fault if you were involved in a serious accident which resulted in your car being examined.

Thank you both ( hadn't considered the legal position of over-inflation if involved in an accident....patzbitz
Read the small print on the tyre wall, it will tell you the maximum load and pressure. On a road car tyre maximum pressure is usually around 3 bar, but as I say, check the small print first.

Didn't always (ever?) work very well though, ZM - I can remember needing truck-driver muscles to drive one or two offenders.
That's different to 'not fitted with' tho Dave.
Power steering was an optional extra on low spec Sierra's.
I was about to say, why don't you convert it, could do it for less than £200
