Top Ten Separation Romances

11:38 Fri 16th Jul 2010 |

What makes a good romantic comedy? Well the man has to be handsome even if he is older; he should also be worthy, bordering on honourable, and with maybe some humour thrown in for good measure. Our heroine should be beautiful, of course, but she should also have some substance and not just be eye candy for the male viewers.

One or both should have experienced personal tragedy or some sort of trouble in their life which makes them seem more vulnerable to the other. The scenery should be sweeping views of stormy mountains and wide plains to symbolise the depth and immensity of their love.

What about a twist? Many audiences like a little bit extra with their romance, so how about the fact that our two protagonists do not meet until the end of the film, or are separated by time or distance and have never met in person?

Here is a Top Ten list of romantic films where the lovers are separated:

Sleepless in Seattle

Undoubtedly an all time classic especially as our two lovers do not properly meet until the last scene of the film.

The Lake House

Truly a romance with a twist; the two lovers communicate through time travelling letters and again do not meet until the end of the film.

The Love Letter

Despite being more than 100 years apart people can still fall in love.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

An unusual plot twist in that the lovers have elected to forget each other but then are drawn together again.

Message in a Bottle

Although our lovers meet in this film they are then separated by death, which is always tragic and heart rending.

You’ve Got Mail

Who can play a good romantic comedy better than Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks especially if they are fierce business rivals in real life but do not know that underneath they are falling in love.

While You Were Sleeping

Some would say that a boyfriend in a coma is a good thing, however, for Sandra Bullock’s character this only makes things more complicated.

Letters To Juliet

What could be more romantic than love that has waited 50 years to come true?

P.S. I Love You

Messages sent from beyond the grave can often be creepy but not in this tale of love and healing.

50 First Dates

Although our lovers have met one of them does not remember and it is like the first time every time.
