Titanic

Titanic is one of the top grossing films of all time. It is an epic, romantic, disaster film and the story is based on the true history of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. From the director of Avatar, James Cameron, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

The film was very well received at its opening and was the top box office film of all time until 2010. Although some viewers thought the plot was thin and the graphic effects overdone the film remains hugely popular. No doubt due to the blistering on screen performances of the lead roles DiCaprio and Winslet. The chemistry between the two was tangible and this transformed the film from historic biopic to epic for many.

The supporting cast also includes some stellar names such as Billy Zane, Kathy Bates and Bill Paxton. Nominated for fourteen Academy Awards, it won eleven, including Best Picture.

The start of the film is in the present day at the site of the Titanic wreck and shows the salvage team and has some great footage of the ship under the water. A hundred year old Rose is introduced and the story is unfolded from her memories. The plot then centres on the star-crossed lovers Rose DeWitt Bukater and Jack Dawson. She is a wealthy young woman who is engaged to marry an older and not so nice business man. Jack and Rose carry on an affair during the voyage and end up in the sea together after the ship has sunk.
