The Proposal

12:07 Wed 30th Jun 2010 |

The Proposal is a romantic comedy with a twist. The main character is played by Sandra Bullock and the story is about her struggle not to get deported to Canada. Her able co-star Ryan Reynolds plays her down trodden assistant who she bullies into marrying her so she can stay in the USA.

Many people think Grandma Annie (Betty White) makes the movie with her dry one-liners and attitude. And a lot of Betty white the actor shows through Grandma Annie the character. In addition, with such greats as Mary Steenburgen (Paxton’s mother) and Craig T. Nelson (Paxton’s father) in supporting roles the performances are exceptional.

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is a workaholic, tyrannical book editor who suddenly finds her career in jeopardy as she faces deportation back to Canada. Her solution is to simply fake an engagement to her unsuspecting assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), who in turn blackmails her for a promotion. However, when the couple are forced to take a trip to Alaska to visit Paxton’s family to convince authorities of the truth of their relationship things start to get a bit sticky. Hilarious performances by Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds raise this romantic comedy above its rivals.
