The Princess Bride

13:16 Fri 23rd Jul 2010 |

The Princess Bride is a romantic adventure film. Based on the novel of the same name by William Goldman and directed by Rob Reiner the film is told as a story read from a book by a grandfather to his sick grandson. The highly talented ensemble cast includes Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright.

At the box office the film was only a modest success but has since acquired a huge following and now has cult classic status. It was very well received by critics and audiences alike, in no small part due to the superbly written script and extremely good acting. Although the film could be said to be a parody of all romantic action films it does it so well and with not a few pokes at itself that one has to love it no matter what your age.

The film has many brilliantly cast cameos from hugely famous actors including Billy Crystal, Mel Smith, Carol Kane, Christopher Guest and Peter Cook; all of whom bring their own unique flavour and depth to the plot.

When her one true love leaves to make his fortune and is allegedly killed by pirates the distraught Buttercup becomes betrothed to the prince of the land so he can become King. She is kidnapped by a trio of seemingly brutal knaves and the prince appears distraught so sends his best men to find her. However, the Dread Pirate Roberts has found her first and he has a surprise secret.
