Gavin And Stacey

Gavin and Stacey is one of the most popular British sit-coms around. It is the winner of two Baftas and four British Comedy awards. Written by James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also star in the show, the story centres around the characters of Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page) that embark on a long distance relationship.

The first series begins with Gavin, 28, a young man living with his family in Billericay, Essex, arranging to meet Stacey, 27, a young woman living with her family in Barry, near Cardiff after they have struck up a long distance telephone relationship in the course of their jobs.

During the subsequent episodes and series the two get married and start trying for a family. There are also a few side plots the most significant of which is the love-hate relationship between Smithy and Nessa who are the best friends of the two main protagonists. Much of the comedy comes from mundane, every day conversations.

The performances from the supporting cast are excellent including Rob Brydon (uncle Bryn), Alison Steadman (Pam, Gavin’s Mum), Melanie Walters (Gwen, Stacey’s Mum) and Larry Lamb (Mick, Gavin’s Dad).

The show originally aired in BBC Three but was moved to BBC One for the final series and specials. It was seen as a hit breakthrough show for BBC Three.
