Hi all
I have got 4g IPod and dowloaded the above app. I have set it up and when I log onto mobile me I can always find it on the map.
As a test I put the iPod in my car and my wife went out and I logged onto mobile me to locate it but it would not locate. As soon as my wife came back home it located it straight away. Anyone have any ideas please?
Kind regards

do you mean an ipod 4?
the location software is working off your home wifi, if you move away from your wifi you will lose the signal

She might have been in a poor signal area. There are loads of places round here with no signal

I thought it used GPS in the same way it tags my photos on the map away from home. If it's using my wifi connection there seems no point in the app as I will never be able to locate it if it's lost away from home
some providers are offering more out and about broadband like "btopenzone"
http://www.btopenzone.com/

so technically you could have internet access outside your wifi zone.
it uses GPS to know where it is, but GPS is only one way, you can not transmit data back via GPS.

To transmit data back you need to be connected to the Internet, so as cazzz says it was using your home internet when you were at home.

(also a great suggestion from cazzz about btopenzone, that and btfon are great services and enable you to get Internet nearly everywhere populated.)

Ahh I see. Thank you all for that. I misunderstood how it worked. Shame really as I thought it was a great idea. I don't really want to pay out for roaming wifi just for this app.
Thank you so much for your help
You have to remember that you can download most (all?) of the apps for your ipod that people with iPhones can, so some of them are designed to work properly on the iphone which will be permanently connected to the internet through the mobile phone network.

Very true. The new 4th gen iPod is virtually the iPhone without the phone part! And every app says 4th gen comp so makes it quite confusing
but you really miss the phone part when you go out though ;)
The app is actually called find my iPhone. Find my iPhone uses a service called Location Services on the iOS device, iPhone, iPad, iPod. iPod Touches like yours use WiFi as the location service, so you can only be tracked when you are connected to a Wifi network, also true of the WiFi only iPad
