my husband's workmate was telling him that their little girl is starting school soon. Apparently the teacher is coming out to their home to see what sort of home he comes from - does this sound right? Does that happen with every child?

Perfectly normal. My friend has just got a job as a teaching assistant and she is accompanying the reception teacher on home visits to meet all of the new children. The things reception teacher said she would come here to meet them before they started school if they didn't go to nursery.

I doubt the school is giving that as the official reason in those words

no, i agree, but is it normal practice for rising fives?
This happened with two of my grandchildren. That was not the reason given but I can't think of another one. Perhaps others can.

is that two out of many, or two out of two gness?
what i'm trying to establish is if it's normal practice, or because of problems, or sen or something
All of the children here go to one of two nurseries in the village - the things were the only ones not in nursery at the time.
Just the two who started school after the scheme was put in place. The first was thirteen years ago.
Sorry, should have added for all children.
Sounds like good pastoral care to me, establishing links with parents.
Possibly also because of the increasing number of 5 year olds who are lacking in primary socialisation.
Every child in this area gets a home visit, dont know what the real reason is but the rumours are they call to make sure you live there.

so many people these days have been giving a relatives address to get in the catchment of a good school.
When I was teaching (at secondary level) I quickly got to know which of my pupil's homes to visit for the best bacon butties!
;-)
We never visited the one where Mabel lived after we discovered that Mabel was Dad's machete.
I work in a SE London primary school and all new nursery children get a home visit. It's just the done thing as far as I can tell.
Thinking about what silliemillie said....my gchildren were in the catchment area for a very popular school. It could have been a check up I guess.
My daughters school has home visits for all new pupils
It gives the teachers a feel of the child's home life
They are not there to judge you and it is something many 100's of schools do now
Gosh, I've never ever heard of this before. My daughter didn't get a visit before she started school.
It's not something I've heard of in South Wales or the Bristol area.
Do they still send someone from the 'school board' if you're not attending as regularly as you should be?
That person is now called the education welfare officer.
Yep; pretty standard practice bednobs. I haven't done home visits myself because they take a LOT of organising and the school hasn't done them in previous years so I wasn't going to volunteer to start! We had lots of chances for parents to visit with children instead and I went to visit the two main feeder playgroups.
Perfectly normal, we do it at our school. xx
