Gold Credit Cards 'Can Cause Travel Insurance Confusion'

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

We all know that purchases with credit cards are often insured by the company in case of fraud or faulty goods. Some opt for the gold credit cards which usually give better rates but you have to be spending more. Some cards also offer other types of insurance as an incentive to buy. But it is worth checking the small print as it may not be all that it seems.

Holders of gold credit cards can be confused about their levels of travel insurance cover, it has been asserted. A leading online insurance company has suggested these types of customers sometimes assume their families are included on policies - only to find out later they are not.

The firm's research found that problems suffered abroad by those who were not covered came to a total of £90 million. The founder of the company remarked many people look at travel insurance the "wrong way".

"[Travellers] are thinking more about cancelled flights," he said. "What people don't understand is that when you have an accident abroad, medical problems are the highest [in cost]."

He also highlighted the instance of a holidaymaker breaking their leg on a trip. Some airlines may not take people with crutches or stipulate they must sit in other, more expensive areas of the plane.

If you are taking more than one trip abroad it is worth looking into an annual travel insurance policy. This are invariably cheaper and usually allow for a maximum number of days abroad. They can be tailored for particular types of holiday for example winter sports.

When looking for travel insurance going online can provide many different companies with many different deals. Make sure you read the small print on any policy to guarantee that all the activities you are planning while away are included.
