Britons Unconcerned By Burglary Threat

Britain's homeowners are not concerned about the threat of burglary despite living in the most burgled nation in Europe, according to new research.

A survey in a well known Sunday newspaper showed that the UK has a burglary rate of almost double that of its European neighbours but research from an insurance firm reports that only three per cent were concerned about their home being broken into.

Top of the country's safety concerns was the growing threat of yob culture and anti-social behaviour, a phenomenon that the government has taken active measures to root out.

The technical services manager at the general insurance business, said: "Despite official Home Office figures suggesting crime is on the decrease, our research shows people still clearly feel we live in an increasingly unsafe environment. Thankfully it appears many aren't experiencing threats to their safety first hand, instead more observational factors such as lack of policing or neighbourhood watch seem to be influencing people's attitudes towards crime and safety."

Interestingly, the survey revealed that a large 38 per cent of people are basing their security fears on declining morals and almost the same amount believe that crime is on the rise, when evidence points to the contrary.

Of those who did cite burglary as their biggest worry, more than a third had actually experienced a break-in before, while one in ten felt that security measures in place at their home would be insufficient to deter housebreakers.

The worry is that these unfounded concerns could be replacing the real safety dangers such as burglary but homeowners can rest assured that their property is protected if they have house insurance.
