Ian, www.cwgc.org lists the vast majority of the war dead of both World Wars. Unfortunately I don't think these records alone will allow you to identify your GGrandfather. The Royal Scots were increased out of all proportion to their peacetime strength during WWI. They lost over 11,000 men killed. Searching the records for J or John Stewart gives 15 names...

Possibly ther Greenbrae Colliery at Dalkeith
or you could write to this address and ask, are you sure he was a coal miner?
Gorebridge and District Local History Society,
95 Hunterfield Road,
Gorebridge,
Midlothian,

01875 821247
Dot - he was definitely a coalminer - this query came up under genealogy a couple of days ago - I found the marriage record on ancestry - John Stewart was listed as a 20 year old coal miner- his father-in law James Husband was also listed as a colliery labourer
Oh ok, I could only ind that one colliery within walking distance of Gorebridge though there was the Vistoria Collery in the next town, but people didn;t walk far to get to work.

The Royal Scots were increased out of all proportion to their peacetime strength during WWI. They lost over 11,000 men killed. Searching the records for J or John Stewart gives 15 names after excluding men buried back in the UK. You may be able to exclude some of the others by going into their personal records - some may have detals of wives or parents which might make them ineligible.

You may be able to get some more information from the Royal Scots - now part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland but they have their own website. Genealogical enquiries cost £15 however.
