Skyrim - Defeating Alduin

Has anyone completed the main story on Skyrim?

The boss battle against Alduin is ridiculously difficult. Needs coaxing down on the ground with the dragonrend shout. Sits there for about 5 seconds, doesn't take any damage and one hit from his fiery breath will kill you quick unless you have a bazillian health potions.

Compounded by the fact there are 2 dragons, one is friendly but I keep mistakenly bringing him down and hitting him with a few spells. TBH I've run away down the mountain and can currently be found picking flowers near Whiterun; I know the fight is still up there waiting for me :-(

Any good tips? (apart from not being rubbish at gaming)

yes, thats the battle trigs. - just keep hiding then?

btw I dont have decent armour. I've played for destruction spells and smithing. Will put on my Archmages robes and cast health restorations spells - from behind a rock.

Yes, think the Winterhold College mission was the first 'big' mission I completed. You get the Archmage cloak and the Staff of Magnus.

So you have to make an attempt to fight Alduin then? I can't just evade him and he flies off after a while?

I did really well and got him to within a inch of his health bar. I used two full charges of the staff of magnus to deplete his magicka then found the lighting spell was dishing big damage.

It all went pair shaped when he whipped me with his tail and hit me against a rock. Game over. It was because I swapped the armour for robes as I was wanting fast magicka regen - no armour value.

thanks Trig - Dragonsbane worked a treat; made it quite easy, considering how I was struggling with it.

I didn't have that sword in my inventory despite completing that mission, had to go to back to the location to collect it!
