Toffee Apples

Toffee apples are always around during the holiday season; they start to appear during Halloween and are still around up until about Christmas.  This festive treat is a perfect way to celebrate Halloween and bonfire night, sweet crunchy toffee and a juicy apple seem very fitting on a cold autumn evening.  Toffee apples go perfectly with lots of fireworks.

Toffee apples are a treat children love; they look so appealing and fun. Toffee apples are sold in autumn because apples start to season in September, there is a plentiful supply of tasty British apples. Making your own toffee apples is very easy and you get the pick of which apples you use, so you are guaranteed they won’t turn out soft and bruised, like so many shop bought toffee apples are.

Ingredients

  • 4 apples
  • 200g soft brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp golden syrup
  • 75 ml water
  • 40g butter

Method

  1. Skewer the apples onto wooden sticks.
  2. Boil all the ingredients in a saucepan except the apples.
  3. Cook for about ten minutes until the toffee reach 300C use a sugar thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer the toffee is ready when you can sprinkle a drop of water in and it turns hard.
  4. Allow the toffee to cool a little, the dip the apples into the toffee.
  5. Place the apples onto a greased tray and leave to cool.
