We were given some eggs by a friend who has a few hens in their back garden. The shells were white (ish) - probably not important. We hard-boiled the eggs. When we had peeled off the shells and cut the eggs in half there was a faint red ring no more than 1 mm wide and about 2 mm from the surface of the yolk within the yolk. The rest of the yoke - within the ring and outside the ring - looked normal. The taste was normal. They do not have a rooster. Any ideas as to the cause of the ring?

Red spots in yolks are the result of some blood from the hen getting into the yolk as the egg is formed. It's harmless, and does not mean the egg is fertilized.

When you crack open a raw egg and if there is a white spot on the yolk that means it is fertilized but even so it is still fine.
Normal with real free range hens, I bet it tasted better than a supermarket egg as well.
A fertilized egg is, apparently, more nutritious than a sterile one.
