I have received a cheque this morning for a few thousand.
I am in England.
I do not know the sender, and confirmed this by looking up their company online.
They addressed it to me, and my full address was neatly written out.

Can I cash this cheque?
Shall I bank it and then not touch it, ready to pay back if chased?

Thanks for your help.

I would take it along to your bank & ask their advice first.
who is the company?

Not likely to say that am I mate?

Think about it.
Have you contacted the company?

they will be able to tell you what it is for.

i could be from an old pension scheme or it could be a loan someone has got out in your name (hoping they would get to your post before you ) phone them a.s.a.p
Damn
And why wouldn't you say the name of the company? you came for advice and if you gave the name of the company things could be looked into further for you ,
Sorry.

My mistake. I sent it to you in error.

Please pay it in to your account, and then PayPal the money back to me. email address below.

You can keep 10% for yourself, as my apology for having inconvenienced you.

The company has nothing to do with money, loans or finance.

Just a business, who make lots of money each year.

50/50 cherry.

Okay ... 45/45 if PWA keeps 10%
I reckon it's a money laundering scam...........they'll ask for the money back once you've cashed the cheque....
Phone the companies accounts department they will be able to tell you what it is for.

It's a reputable business.

I'm thinking they may have paid me instead of the company I work for, just because it's in the same industry as me, but how did they get my address?

Maybe they will query it as the start of the financial year in April?
Just phone them it may be genuine
"Just phone them"

I knew the answer would be there somewhere.
If it sounds too good to be true........it probably is. Have a nose around google using unsolicited cheque scams or something similar. I wouldnt put it anywhere near my bank account.
don't think he/she wants to phone them though, hmmm they want to put it in the bank cash it and not touch it ,do you really think if you had a few thousand in your bank you wouldn't touch it?
didn't think you could cancel cheques anymore after they had been cashed?
Open a savings a/c pay it in there and leave it there then argue the toss about why you should money back that is yours? =D
