The Phrase 'in Shock'

When folk use the phrase 'I was in shock' it always grates on me. Am I alone? I would use 'I was shocked'.

Its a short form of I was in a state of shock I imagine.
It doesn't bother me, but some other things do.

In shock is medical, it isn't the same as feeling shocked.

If they were really in shock they would need to be admitted to hospital wouldn't they?

People are usually in shock due to other reasons. e.g. I was with someone in A&E with bad cut to hand. They later went in to shock, but they came for the cut, not the shock. Also shock symptoms did not get them seen any quicker.

It's a case of time, helly. 'I was in shock' indicates a passage of time during which someone was shocked, it could last some time. 'I was shocked' is much shorter e.g. 'I was shocked to discover that they were not married'. A momentory thing. Hope this helps :)

Yes it grates on me too because being shocked and being in shock are two different things.
