It contains 5 credit cards, various membership cards for local stuff, and some other stuff, including cash.
I'm loathed to hand it in the police because I'm sure the cash will end up in someone's back pocket (me of little faith).
This person has hopefully cancelled all the cards but do you think it's reasonable to contact the card provider and tell them I have the wallet. Would they forward my contact details so this gentleman could then come and collect his property from me?
If you found yourself in this position would you think this is the best way to deal with it?

Qula, contact the organisations on the cards. They won't give you the member's contact details but they will take your telephone number and pass a message to the owner to contact you.

That's what I did when I found myself in a similar situation.

No.
I'd hand it in to the Police Station.
They usually itemise the contents.........
are you accusing the police of theft?
hand it in,cause if i lost it it would be the first place i would go,phone them and tell them you have handed it in.
Hand it into the police. They will have to go through the contents with you and you sign agreeing to what's in the wallet. If it is not claimed in 6 months(?) the cash is yours...

They will contact the card issuers....and pass on your details so you can be thanked...

Not everyone is corrupt...

I would contact the card provider - definitely
If there are membership cards for local places, what about contacting them and asking them to pass on the message to their member?
why has it taken you 2 days to decide what to do with it???????the gentleman will think its gone for good.
No don't contact the card provider, they will do nothing except cancel the cards. They are not the police after all.

Take it to the station and ask for a receipt for it lus a list of contents if you're that suspicious.

Nothing in it the wallet that identifies the owner then? You can't look them up on BT phone directories and try ringing them?
Indeed they do jth.
I found a money pouch, which, when I took it to the police station, was counted by the
chap on the desk.
He itemised it and was found to contain £351-63.
I was given a receipt, but it was claimed by a taxi driver. That was the last I heard.

I think your comment regarding the police is dreadful..........
But I'm not sure how many Police Stations there are built under bridges..........
I'm not a great lover of the police myself always, but generally if you find something and hand it in then it's itemised and returned to it's proper owner, so I wouldn't worry too much.
shocking that you have kept this persons possessions for 2 days without handing them in

Well, OK craft1948.
I'll phone around Mrs.Chappie.
I think qula just wants to make sure it reaches its rightful owner, but if you dont make a decision soon you could be in trouble.

Why have you still got it in your possession?

Some poor soul is probably really worried by loosing his/her wallet while your hanging on to it. Hand it to the police properly and why not ask the local paper to print that a wallet was found but is now at the Police Station

how would you feel if it was you that had lost it.

Droopy, if I lost my wallet everything would be cancelled in an instant, this is purely about the amount of cash involved. And yes, Dee sa, I want it to go back to it's rightful owner.
Jackthehat implies I live under a bridge and am a troll.
Well, thanks for contributing.
