My husband and I are having another couple over for an afternoon next week. We used to meet in the evening and have wine and snacks - crisps, sausage rolls etc. However, we are all OAPs now and they dont like going out in the dark. What would be nice to serve in the afternoon? We will still have wine and then tea or coffee. No sandwiches. Thanks.

What Pinki...you don't do cheese and wine afternoons?
Afternoon snacks are awkward, your guests will be either full of lunch or thinking of their evening meal.
You can either opt for light snacks such as crisps and nuts, with a fruit cake and cream cakes, or suggest a late lunch and provide a heartier meal, a casserole, perhaps. Something that can be eaten casually and won't spoil if eaten later.

I often have friends over for the afternoon but always invite 'em for lunch first (mid-day) I do a huge saucepan of Crofters Veg soup fresh baked French bread croutons, grated parmesan cheese to sprinkle, Home baked Apple pie + cream.
We're not really wine people but we like our Cava which is flowing all the time.
(Summertime its cold meats & salads) + Cava.

Cheese it is! Thanks all.
what about baking in the oven a couple of this round brie or camembert in the wood box like they do on the tv, and serve with bought french stick or ideally the mini rolls you buy part baked they are lovely fresh out the oven and won't be has hard and chewy as shop baked.

You could serve this with additional cold cheeses on the side and grapes, maybe some mini pork pies or scotch eggs?
Freshly baked scones with a really nice jam or cheesy savoury scones. Some nice mixed grapes or small fruit kebabs (made on cocktail sticks). And you have to have something choccie with wine. Marshmallows or nuts dipped in melted choc
