triggerhippy i have just found that , thing is this person is in his late eighties and is sure that he has not paid into any other pension or cashed any life policy in
They are asking for a load of info from him that he is worried about giving out.
can you ring a general number on his behalf and ask if they are likely to of sent a letter out and what sort of info will they ask for in the letter

Did he ever work in the public sector as a civil servant and have a non-contributory pension?

He's right to be cautious about what info he gives- he should write/ring asking for some more info about what the policy before he gives out too much info.

mccfluff they do have a freephone number but i am unable to use it as i have no landline
I would do what Triggs suggested - check their contact details and get someone to call and confirm validity.

They will need to ID him, I suspect they have asked for DOB, formera ddresses, places of work and NI number.

correct , thing is he has been retired for over 20 years and his private pension is from his last place of work were he worked for 20 years.

so any other must be from over 40 years ago
Capita is well known. Just need to be sure it is who they claim it is who have contacted your friend. You getting in touch with them via a known valid number or e-mail address should clarify that.

mccfluff thank you for that number but they will not tell me anything , they want/need his info to proceed before giving me any info
Ah, but they admit it was them that contacted you then. That's your cue that it's probably genuine not a scam.

it is not me they have contacted, my friend has got to check that the letter has come from sheffield.

capital are well nown for their if's, may and could
I've checked the Capita intranet and Capita Friends Life appears to be genuine. They are always buying new companies.

But, as others have said, I would recommend calling them on a number not obtained from the letter.

Who was the person who sent the letter? Did it have their tel numb?
