Is it really true that the hours of sleep before midnight are more beneficial than sleep after that time? Is there actually any research that confirms this? Or is it an urban myth?

It is an urban myth.
just a proverb i think.

"One houres sleepe before midnight is worth three after.
[1640 G. Herbert Outlandish Proverbs no. 882]"
Hospital is a place where they wake you up to give you a sleeping pill.

I don't subscibe to the '1 hour before midnight's worth 2 after' business, but I do think that different people have different times of the night when they can miss sleep without it bothering them and , contrarily, times when missing a couple of hours really mucks up their next day. For me it is the hours between about 4am and 6 am that really affect me. If I don't sleep then I'm dreadfully tired. Doesn't seem to matter too much if I'm awake before then.
Yes, I think it's an urban myth.

As long as you get enough sleep to function efficiently it doesn't matter when you put the hours in.
