It depends which system you are using e.g. Hansard as to the format of the referencing (my uni used Hansard) - but you always put the original year of publication, not later editions of the publication (unless the book was later revised).
Possibly the one you got the information from.
Can you expand on exactly what you mean by "normally a few listed"? A book will only have one original date of publication.
You will have a guide to compiling a bibliography in your induction pack surely
i disagree about putting the date of the "original" book. Surely you should put the date of the actual book you looked in
ps boxy, do you mean harvard referencing?
I use Harvard referencing (check out Leeds Uni site, great guide there) and this provides for the use of editions.
Yes I do mean Harvard, sorry all - by original book, I mean the date the book was first published, not later printings. So you could say ** London, 2nd Ed., 1998 ?
You should always try and read the most up to date book and inside the cover there will be a date of the printing of the book and the edition etc. The url below will give you a good guide for Harvard referencing. Also if you have got the book out from your uni library etc, it should give the date on the Catalogue listing. Hope this helps.

Question Author
oh goodness it even tells me the publisher and where it was printed fanbloodytastic!
I just put the book name into the search facility in my local university library catalogue....gives all the details of the books.... Cant you do the same in the place you study - ie their library catalogue?
I'm sure (as dotty says) that your programme handbook will have full details in it about referencing, with handy hints etc. Great that you are reading ahead - and I have heard that book is good, some of my colleagues have used it for reference.
Question Author
