as in the line: "alone and warming his five wits, the white owl in the belfry sits" ate they simply the 5 senses, or something more obscure?

The 5 senses were sometimes known as the 5 outward wits.
The 5 inward wits were "common wit (instinct)", "imagination", "fantasy", "estimation", and "memory".
Not sure if that was what Tennyson was referring to or not though.
