Afternoon all!

We've been considering giving you the opportunity to remove adverts across the site with Google's new "contributor" option.

This would mean that if you wanted to remove ads, and continue to support the site in a small way, you could do so.

Obviously this wouldn't apply to everyone, but there's a few on here who might fancy removing adverts while still contributing to the continued existence of the site :)

Anyway, how much would you consider a reasonable price?

I think ab should pay me for my time spent on their site.... The company I work for does :)

It would be similar - you'd be donating to remove ads :)
Ed - just a thought - would using the Google payment thingummy require the user to open a Google account?
I do hope not, I have more than enough thingummies already.
Ed, you previously commented: 'It's a good point regarding "refunds" for suspension etc... It's interesting. I'd like to know about what everyone would feel was fair regarding this'

At the risk of being very 'direct' I think you're being very naive about this. I don't think it's a matter of being 'fair', it's a matter of AB being legally bound to reinstate 'x' amount as a specific percentage of whatever monthly fee, pro-rata to the date on which the suspension was served. Failure to do this could possible be construed as a breach of contract. Sorry, I know I sound like an anorak here but I think you could be heading into a minefield of legalities.

Keep smiling.
I think £5 a month is fair.
Zac I think that's where the earlier confusion arose - it wouldn't be a membership fee, but a 'no advert' fee.

Surely then legally all AB would have to do is honour its promise of if you pay , you will get your AB ad free.
Just saying it needs to be very carefully worded Mamya. I didn't mention the word 'membership'.
I haven't read the answers (may have been mentioned) but wouldn't a charge put off new users?

anything over £2 per month and I would hand in my one and only badge!
Even just a no- ad payment would have to stop if someone was suspended. Otherwise, you are fining them as well.

Would not paying the AB Techies a bit more so they get rid of the problem Ads not solve the problems?
Yes
Facebook dont advertise but Zukerman managed a handsome donation to charity
are ads as a whole actually a problem? I use plenty of sites with advertising, though I couldn't swear I've ever actually responded to one. The problem with AB (though I haven't experienced it, I've just read anguished pleas from those who have) seems to be rogue ads that take over the screen and stop the site functioning
AB has changed as the years have passed - remember when mentioning company names got your post deleted? So subscribing in some way for an upgraded service is a change.
As I see it, the only way to see if it could work is to go ahead and do it.
To answer your question Ed, I agree that a few pounds a month to be ad-free would be fine.

But ........... Baldric has hit the spot here. It's treating the symptoms rather than the cause.

I don't think the ads themselves are the problem. It's something we've all got used to across plenty of other sites.

"SwitchAds" is possibly the main culprit. It's a tech problem. The Ad provision is terribly disruptive to the way a browser reads the HTML. It would be much better if Ad provision is somehow built in to the coding.

Things like SwitchAds poking its nose into the HTML causes the problems.
tambo, facebook makes $1b a quarter in advertising revenue and makes billions of dollars from their games

I can hardly believe how many people misread the question here!

Anyway, I use an ipad and am lucky enough to have no problems with the ads so wouldn't need to subscribe to an ad free version of the site. If I had experienced problems with them affecting my use, I would probably have wandered off by now and unlikey to pay for them to be removed. Could the site be upgraded to make to make the ads less intrusive?

And present users.
google will continue making money out of people visiting websites that aren't theirs, why give them even more money?
All my present income. It's worth it.
