It appeared out of the blue and I am curious to know what it is, before I dig it up.

To eliminate or confirm it being 'Japanese Knotweed', simply look at a cross section of the stem to see if it is hollow. Personally I doubt if it is.

Guess I'll have to wait until it flowers but I'm pretty sure it's Bay laurel
It just looks like honeysuckle to me,and the fragrant smell would tie in as well.
First of all i thought Bay bu not sure then i wondered if it could be the young growth of Arbutus unedo or Strawberry tree

SOLVED: (I think) I tried to get a spade underneath it and found that the plant was formed from a Rhizome belonging to a Bay Laurel which we had many years ago and which I had completely forgotten about. The root from which it came must have been about 6" in diameter and I seem to remember that I needed a chainsaw to cut through it. It's somewhat surprising that it took so many years before sending up these shoots.
Glad to see your puzzle has been solved!

I believe it was Retrochick, who first suggested bay laurel... Spot On!

This just go's to prove, just how tenacious, some tree roots can be!
