Despite following the suggestions in the link I still can't get past the 'authenticating' stage. Any thoughts?

Pressing the three dots at the top of the screen doesn't do anything. I think I better leave if for now or I might be tempted to take it out into the garden and see if I can fix it with a heavy hammer.
