I don't know if this has already been discussed here but I think a murderer and rapist sentenced to life imprisonment should not be allowed the right to die. He should have to live with himself for the rest of his natural life and not take the easy route to escaping justice.

Let him save the taxpayers some money
Belgium is a nice wee place - and a lot cheaper than a trip to Switzerland.

I think that the guy should be offered castration as an alternative. I haven't read the story in the link - but it will be much more complicated in reality.

AOG, as a private business Dignitas needs to advertise to get its clients. It can publish figures that state how many people they have helped to die.

Belgium is a different matter. As it is their health service that carry out the procedures they don't want more patients so don't advertise. In 2009 the Belgian authorities stated they had assisted 5 people from other member states to die and since then it could be many more. I don't think they are obliged to release the figures. As far as I know there is no private clinic in Belgium that assists people to die in exchange for money like Dignitas.

gness, I meant to comment on your post earlier. I am sorry you have had to endure such a dreadful experience and can empathise with your feelings regarding that man's illness and subsequent death.

I have met many rape victims and a lot feel like you. Some, however, carry a great burden of guilt that their attacker is in prison or has been in prison, especially when that attacker is a relative. I find it hard to comprehend but I do understand that that burden would be much worse if their attacker died because of the rape, whether by choice or death penalty.

I think that maybe anger is a healthier attitude than guilt in the case of rape victims. I hope you have had all the support available to you and that it has helped.

I thought assisted suicide was illegal in the EU.

He has served 30 years and now wants to die........fine......that seems reasonable as he will certainly no longer be a threat to other women.

Our rapists after doing their "porridge" are generally freed.(yes! yes! I know that he is also a murderer)

Sensible solution in my opinion.
Thanks, Hc...x
There's an easy solution. Let him have his euthanasia, then keep his remains in gaol to finish his sentence. Sorted !

TTT far from being illegal 'assisted suicide ' or euthanasia is so popular in Holland that the authorities have had to set up 'mobile death units' to cope with the demand . Euthanasia is on the way to becoming the most common cause of death in Holland.
The list of conditions where the patient can demand the 'right to die' in Holland has recently been extended to include 'depression' and 'dementia !'
Were I demented I think I might well want to request an end. But I'd need someone else to request it for me I suppose. Living will anyone ?

Well, it would appear that your wishes will not be taken into account.
The man realises he's a menace to society and the Belgian taxpayer will gain the benefit. Unfortunately the link provides no information about the thoughts/wishes of his victims and their families, so one would have to guess that more than 50% wouldn't want to see him ever released again and that his death may well bring about some real closure for them.
I can only add with 'au revoir'.
