yesterday a friend told me I should keep doors and windows shut in hot weather, she says that I am letting in the heat and whirling it round with my fans, its my first thought on a hot day, to open up and let out stale air and let in fresh, I can't bear to not have them open, who's right?

I can see sense in both ways, but I hate being shut in, so will probably leave them open.
Open all day, closed at night.
Hi whiskeryron...You are cool man.!

OK, as all your win has now gin and I still have a betttle loft, let's fall our glisses and, if we get beary leyed we'll have a trep to spicksavers.

Hans.
People who live in hot countries usually close the shutters over their windows during the day. Maybe the answer is to draw the curtains and keep your windows closed.
bookbinder: if the primary aim is to keep cool, that's exactly what you should do....as I said sometime before you! Which is why they do just that in all the hot countries you care to mention.
Keep the windows and importantly the curtains closed in very hot weather otherwise you will be just letting the hot air and direct sunlight in. When it cools at night open them up but close them before the outside temp rises in the morning. You can't really compare your house to a car or greenhouse neither have insulated walls/roofs or curtains/blinds to keep the sunlight out.
Ratty, you are absolutely right,I have lived in hot countries and it was essential to keep the blinds or curtains closed.the darker the room, the cooler it will be.
Fans are good to have as they will make movement and keep air cool
Kloofnek, fans do not 'keep the air cool'. The air they move cools you, the heat generated by the fan motors actually warms the air up so don't leave them on if there is no-one in the room as they simply warm the air and raise your electricity bill.
Well.I have always found them good and keep the place cool. Each to their own.,
Kloof: what jom says is right....fans CAN'T actually cool the air (that you can can measure with a thermometer). What they do is help sweat evaporate more quickly (so called "cooling by evaporation") from your skin surface, so that YOU actually feel cooler...the air around you is still at the same temp. The result is that you DO feel more comfortable though.
Kloof, it's simple school physics, a fan will warm the air, just not enough that you would notice. The only thing that can cool the air is something cooler to absorb the heat, or a heat pump.
