Yay, finally got the 2048. Eventually finished on 29772.
That thing about keeping the bigger doubles in the bottom 2 rows was the key, although I was forced into using the UP arrow a couple of times before the 2048 arrived. That was at 21236 and the board looked very inviting at that stage, less than half full, but I got a run of unusable tile flops towards the end and couldn't quite break the 30k barrier.
But that's it - I'm not playing it any more!!!

Bet you do! I still haven't got to that tile- only 1024 and close. I use the top two rows for holding, but still not got there yet.
Well done, I lost the will a few weeks ago, never got past 1024.
err, hate to ask, but wot on earth are you playing? :-)

Mind you, a friend on FB just posted a screenshot of a 58k score! It didn't show the board so I don't know if it included multiple 2048 tiles or maybe even a 4096 or two.
Just made it to a 55,648 score including my first 4096 tile. Pictures for evidence:

vg jim, i still haven't made it past 1024

Wow - well done Jim!
Have to admit my 29772 is my highest by a long way. Despite my promise to stop playing I've given it another dozen or so attempts, and while I've usually managed a 1024 tile my score has rarely gone past about 15k.
It's so addictive!
