Well I've just had one for dinner. I was feeling lazy and I had it in a hamper I won in a raffle. I think the last time I had one was about 30 years ago. The pastry was quite nice and the gravy, but I had to search for the meat, and I did wonder about its provenance.

My great aunt put one in the oven and promptly forgot about it until it exploded and nearly gave her daughter a heart attack!!!!
Only on Dartmoor.....is that why it's called dart as in sprinting?
I've got one on my shelf, in case of emergencies :-)
I think they are awful but Mr S loves them, still very much on sale. Got two in the cupboard
My OH has found them in the local poundshop, and keeps threatening to buy one. I said fine, so long as you get me something else for supper!
Incidentally horseshoes, I wonder if my OH knew your great-aunt, as he was telling me about a lady who put one in the oven unpierced, and nearly had a heart attack when it blew up!
I loved them in the early 70's before I learnt how to bake...........
I remember the one we had last Thursday but prior to that it's a blur, we buy maybe 2 or 3 a month. lovely with chips and peas
Oh dotty please tell me you don't eat them..............
On a par with Pukka Pies. Bleurgh
what's the problem they are brilliant, love them. We can't all like the same food and i certainly wouldn't exclaim at anyone else's choice of food in their own home, that's just rude.,
Sorry dotty........each to their own.
When we were on holiday once I cooked one for four people. There were precisely 2 and a half chunks of meat in it. Shocking! However, the pastry has a taste all its own. LOL
Funnily enough I cooked one yesterday.

I got it for my nephew who's working nights.
My son said to me the other week - look at this! he lifted the pastry lid of a Fray Bentos steak pie and there was one piece of gristle, one piece of fat and the rest gravy - it belonged to his room-mate whose mother had sent him a 'care package' because he was living on cornflakes, pasta and toast. He's going to send it back
I didn't ask my nephew how much meat was in his. He ate it all though.

My granddad used to love Frey Bentos pies. I think he had one everyday for about 2 years.
still on sale over here in Norn Iron--got one in the cupboard
i like them esp the pastry-will do a "meat count" when i cook this one and let youse kno----they do the chicken n mushroom ones too here,i'm not as fond of them
The only thing I remember about these pies is when my dad wanted one but his tin opener broke so he got a massive saw out and was frantically trying to hack into the bloody thing. He was getting angrier by the second while I was trying to stop myself audibly laughing.
Greggs Steak Bakes - love 'em. Pity they've reduced the contents by 12%, as reported in one of last weekend's newspapers. :-(
Back in Stoke Newington, 1966, Wednesday was Fray Bentos S&K night,
Jim and I used to fight over who got most pieces of kidney.
