Well I've just had one for dinner. I was feeling lazy and I had it in a hamper I won in a raffle. I think the last time I had one was about 30 years ago. The pastry was quite nice and the gravy, but I had to search for the meat, and I did wonder about its provenance.

We will, Giveup. I should have been down last month and lunch with DT while I was visiting, but the acrobatics on the ice left me unable to drive far. Will be down in the summer though....love to meet up. x
Gawd damn it, I was staying in Bovey not that long ago, and a night at the Rock Inn, given trouble with the car, my friends off on a trip. Got a commission there, I am hoping, Bovey that is.
I quite like those Fray Bentos tinned pies. They're a good 'standby' meal with just the addition of a well-buttered jacket potato. A quick check in my kitchen cupboard shows that I've currently got three of them (1 S&K, 1 Steak & Mushroom and 1 Chicken & Mushrooom). If you're mad enough to pay full price for them, they're around £2 each but Asda often has them on special offer and they frequently turn up for just a quid in Poundland.

I certainly remember them having more meat than this one did and I thought I heard the sound of hooves.
Lots of calories though. Who ate all the pies ?
Question Author
I did have it with Jersey Royals, purple sprouting broccoli, braised onions and peas. And a glass or two
Question Author
Do you mean Bovey near Beer or Bovey Tracy.
Still available up here in Lancashire . The meat content has been drastically reduced over the years. Not worth buying now.
As for Gregg's profits dropping that could be due to the fact that lots of the 'Two for a Pound' Pie shops have opened up almost next door to many of the Gregg's shops.
>>>And a glass or two

Well almost any food is OK when accompanied by 'a glass or two' ;-)

You're so right Buenchico
Wow - didn't realise that you have two, giveup. Bovey Tracey, looking at a comm for the Craft Guild building there.
I like the Fray Bentos pies but not the puddings. I used to have them in sandwiches back in my very poor teen years.
Question Author
Bovey Tracey is just over an hour from here.
the car decided to have an axle problem at Ilchester....but you are very close to Honiton of course.
you haven't been hit by all the problems with the carpets, I hope, giveup, though I understand they are bouncing back, though it's the fibre crew who are in trouble.
Question Author
No the carpet factory was actually quite a closed community, quite seriously almost cradle to grave (they have carpet houses, carpet pensions and all sorts of things like that) We live here because we love East Devon. I'm supposed to be retired and my husband is Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy so it doesn't matter where we live.
I keep a couple in the pantry for Mr FGT if I am not about - he loves the steak ones - they are OK for what they are for - quick cheap pies.
It is a lovely area (says he biting his lip - I can remember visiting Beer when I was pretty young and then cruising along the coast selling dinghies into marinas etc off the back of one that I took around the SW!).
My Ex Girlfriend streaked through Bovey Tracey, she was a model for Pretty Polly at the time, we were out with friends, me and my mate were walking in front when all of a sudden the girls streaked past us naked, this was late evening so not too many people about!! I think they were protesting at us not paying them much attention. Well they certainly got our attention, and the attention of a quite a few others lol.
