Was in Crete quite a few years ago. Don't miss a trip to Spinalonga (the leper island) and the Minoan palace (short bus trip from Heraklion). I hired a car so got up into the hills and to small villages off the beaten track. Lovely place.
Thanks Maggie. Read The Island by Victoria Hislop and have since wanted to go to Spinalonga. Knossos is on my absolutey to do list. Can one get away with Greek or is there a local patois?
Knossos has interactive audio tapes, and english speaking guides are available, but we found the path round the palace is fully labelled in multiple european languages. Enjoy your trip
Ditto maggie, there is a huge plain on top of the mountains with windmills, did you go there? recommend it, birthplace of Zeus - father of all Gods, can't remember the name at the moment.
Sugar. I didn't mean it would be weird me wanting to go on holiday with you! I meant it would be weird a complete stranger asking another to join them on their hols...
Not having any tips of what to do,but, just to warn you about the sun and heat! I was there in the mid 80s and it was the hottest place i ever experienced. I loved my" hot"holidays, but back then,it was too hot for me. Granted,i was there in august then, but, even so, I had been in Ibizia in august and not struggled.
we went in November and it poured with rain - on the way back from Knossos, we were driving on some remote road and came across an Ostrich farm, it was bizarre.
Trish and I we're there about 12 years ago and really enjoyed it. It was pre stroke and we did all the usual sights. If you're feeling energetic pack a pair of hiking boots and take a walk through the Samariá gorge. Its about 17k and takes most of the day and was worth it even if it was only for the cold beer at the end.
