Could it have been masking tape they were using? I use it when painting round the edges of a painting to form a frame on the paper/canvas. It can be peeled off (carefully) when the paint has dried.

It was same size as the canvas ( looked like a sheet of paper which had a large oval cut out of it placed over the canvas) and when he finished the painting he peeled the paper sheet off ...it looked amazing
Search on amazon for repositionable spray mount. You spray the back of the paper. it will stick to the canvas but be removeable when you want.
You can buy low tack aerosol, like 3M Spray Mount....used by artists as a temporary adhesive. If you used that you have the versatility to use any paper or fabric for the resist shape ....even newspaper so it will work out cheaper. The resist will peel off easily.
It's what air brush artists use to mask out certain areas and get clean lines. Available from all good craft shops.

well that sounds about right & cheaper , thankyou !
Airbrush artists would tend to use a product called 'Frisket Masking Film'. It's a very thin, totally clear, low-tack plastic film available at art supply shops.
